Accessibility – it is an issue that has been around for thousands of years, but only in recent times has it been properly addressed. Even a hundred years ago, people living with disabilities had a struggle to perform everyday tasks that the rest of us take for granted. As a result, many would be left unable to leave their homes, collect their own shopping, etc.
Fortunately, things have moved on a lot since then and we see many things that have been put in place to help those who are disabled enjoy the same things as others, to have the same access to things as others and businesses like accessiBe are helping in with this. In fact, it is now at the point in many countries, that if we don’t see a ramp into a building, or a sloped sidewalk leading into a crossing, we will notice and think it is unacceptable. Yes, the world has changed, and the needs of those who are less abled are being taken notice of.
But while these changes are happening, the world continues to change in other ways too and so new ways in which we need to show consideration to those living with a disability are being created. For example, while ramps were first being added to buildings and wider doors for wheelchair access, there was no internet. Now, however, the internet is a major part of our daily lives. We rely on it for many things. We can be transported anywhere, see any sights, check the latest news, see what the weather is going to be like, book holidays, find the answer to any questions, the list goes on. During the pandemic, the use of the internet became even more important. Let’s face it, without the internet during the pandemic, how could businesses have continued, how could the world have carried on?
As this massive change in the world has occurred, what has been done to help disabled people keep up? The internet can be an excellent tool for those who are disabled, making information much easier for them to access and allowing them to be involved in things they may not have had the chance to before. But sometimes, for this to be the case, more help is needed. Depending on the disability, a variety of things may need to be adjusted for their comfort and aid.
This might seem like a huge undertaking as there are many different types of disabilities out there, but it doesn’t have to be the case. There is software available that can help to get websites accessible both quickly and at a very good price.
