A recent update of Whatsapp introduced the Disappearing Feature which let chat conversations to be erased when it’s turned on, today I will share with you some advantages and disadvantages this feature can add to your WhatsApp as a user.
According to WhatsApp, conversations between individuals need to feel as close to in-person as possible, the company made it clear on their blog site.
Our goal is make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp.
thus conversation can automatically be deleted or vanished after 7days if WhatsApp disappearing messages are turned on.
If you want to test this feature, see how to enable WhatsApp disappearing Messages.
The pro and cons of disappearing messages on WhatsApp depends on user experience and or purpose of using the App. Whatapp introduces the feature with the aim that memories are important but it shouldn’t stick around forever. A user like me will always want memories around as much as possible.
The Pros Whatsapp Disappearing Messages
One of the best advantages regarding WhatsApp disappearing messages feature when turned on is the Database size reduction, The more your chats are erased the more bytes are reduced from your WhatsApp database thereby occupying less space of your storage since media and text files are permanently erased after every 7days when enabled. However, the translated (forwarded or screenshot or downloaded media) chat conversations will not vanish as it is no longer part of one in one group chat.
The disappearing message is not only about conversation memories but also to make your chat lighter, although most of what we send on WhatsApp are things we don’t need to hold to as memory.
If you still don’t want to keep records of your media files since by default auto-download media is always on even when chat conversations are deleted, then you will have to turn off automatic media download. To do turn auto-download off in WhatsApp Settings > Storage and Data.
Cons of WhatsApp Disappearing Message
Whatsapp users having similar opinions to me may not always turn on the feature, at least not for all contacts. If Sometimes one needs to go back to the oldest conversation for one reason or the other either to pick a file or revised some messages, obviously the chat would no longer exist if the disappearing message was prior enabled.
Although, both individuals can choose not to or enable the feature, or already have the chat screenshot or forwarded at their end, might be an option to get back the needed message. That is why Whatsapp warns users.
Note: Only use disappearing messages with trusted individuals. For example, it’s possible for someone to:
Forward or take a screenshot of a disappearing message and save it before it disappears.
Copy and save content from the disappearing message before it disappears.
Take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or other device before it disappears.
